The Graphical Interface

The GUI is accessed by the command

libprs500

The GUI was designed to fulfill two main roles.

  1. Organize your collection of ebooks. For the foreseeable future, ebooks are going to be available in many different, incompatible formats. The library is designed around the concept of a logical book that can have many different formats, all of which the library keeps track of.
  2. Copy books to the SONY reader. Done by simple drag and drop. The library automatically selects the best of the available formats for a given logical book to copy to the reader. In the future, the library will gain the ability to automatically convert books into the reader's native LRF format.

The major functions of the GUI are described below:

Adding ebooks to the library

There are two ways to add books to the library. Either click the button on the toolbar, or drag and drop the file onto the icon.

Once the book is added to the library you can edit its title, author, etc.

Adding ebook formats

There are two ways to add different formats for the same book.

  1. Drag and drop the new format onto the entry for the book in the library view.
  2. Select the book and click the button.

Note that the library stores only a single instance of each format. Thus if the ebook already has the TXT format and you add a .txt file to it, the TXT format is replaced.

Editing book meta information

There are two ways to edit book meta information.

  1. Double click on the information you want changed for example the title or publisher.
  2. Select the book whose information you want changed and click the button.

Meta information is saved in the various formats the ebook is available in. Thus this is a very convenient way to edit the meta information of ebooks in various formats. Note that at the time of writing there is only metadata support for the LRF format. Future support for RTF and PDF is planned.

Copying books to the reader

Drag and drop books from the library onto the icon or the . You can also drag and drop files from your computer directly onto the reader but in this case you will not be able to edit meta information and the file won't be saved in the library.
